The Reformation of Beauty. Protestantism and Spiritual Roots of Functionalism

  • Original language description

This contribution opens up the question of the interconnection of the outer appearance – beauty – of the world, formed by human society, with the transformations of religious faith in individual communities. It investigates to what degree the requirements of the radical European Reformation influenced the form of architecture, arts and the landscape. It pays special attention to the Enlightenment, sometimes labelled as being a “third Reformation, which had its roots in the preceding Reformation streams and which accelerated their social impact. It observes the linkage of the Enlightenment with Protestantism from the perspective of the Czech Lands where it materialised in the specific building design of a “tolerance prayer house. The emphasis on the functionality of these buildings and their minimalist furnishings justifies their inclusion amongst the predecessors of modernist architecture, which was even noted by contemporary theorists at the beginning of the 20th century. The particular nature of “tolerance prayer houses also influenced a range of contemporary approaches to them – ranging from demolitions to traditionally-conceived re-builds, pious architectural conservation to exposing the “original and “true (though, never ever existing) functionalist core of the space of worship through the removal of its remaining decorative features.
