Original language description

The article focuses on the social position of mothers who gave birth to an illegitimate child in 1741-1830 on the domain of Šťáhlavy. Its main aim is to discuss the circumstances of these births by analyzing several factors which are important for understanding unmarried mothers’ motivations: their age at which they first gave birth, their ability to get married, their marriage age and the interval between the birth of the illegitimate child and the marriage. The indicators specified above are compared for both unmarried and married mothers to better understand differences in their sexual behaviour. The period under study witnessed fundamental social changes which are followed through three cohorts based on the years in which the single mothers gave birth to their first illegitimate child: 1741-1770, 1771-1800 and 1801-1830.
