Czechoslovak-Italian relations in the interwar period cannot be described as cordial or friendly, the Italian effort to revise the Versailles peace system clashed with the Czechoslovak effort to maintain and strengthen it. The culmination of this process came in 1938, when after the German Anschluss of Austria, Italy came alongside Germany in the German effort to destruction of the Czechoslovak state, culminating in active Italian participation in the preparations and negotiations of the Munich Agreement and the Vienna Award. Italy then supported the Polish and Hungarian claims on the Czechoslovak border territories. However, the German occupation of the Czech lands in March 1939 placed Italy in the role of a mere German sparring partner in the alliance of the Berlin-Rome Axis.nn
