Locals and outlanders -an outline of the ethnic composition of Wenceslaus II's Prague court
Original language description
The study deals with specific issues of so-called foreigners who were present at the royal court of Wenceslas II. They were mainly people of German descent, although ethnic German descent may have meant that they came from a family that had settled in the Czech Kingdom. Most of them were educated clerical staff at court — in the Chancellery and as royal advisers. The second group of these people were writers - lyric poets and epic writers. Thanks to their activities, which reached their peak indded at the Prague court of Wenceslas II, they left us a number of literary works. Although written in German, they represent the oldest works of fiction in Czech history, preceded by even Old Czech literary works from the 14th century. The study also addresses the issue of the multilingual potential of the Czech lands in the presence of people of Czech and German origin.
