Bohemian Jews in Poznań after 1541: Merchants, Rabbis and Exiles

  • Original language description

The expulsion of Jews from Bohemia in 1541 represented an unprecedented disruption to the continuity of their settlement. A significant portion of the exiles chose Polish cities as places of refuge. This was due, among other reasons, to the existence of business, professional and family contacts there. Kraków is rightly described as the key destination for Jewish migrants from Bohemia, but one cannot overlook other Polish cities, such as Poznań, which was one of the major commercial centres of the Polish kingdom. Using the push-pull factor and network theory approaches, and drawing primarily on the municipal books of Prague and Poznań, this study tries to provide insights into the migration and mobility of Jews between Bohemia and the Polish city of Poznań in the period immediately after 1541.nnn
