Replacing an Eagle with a Lion: Reconstruction of the Symbolic Images of the Nation-State Identity in Bohemian Lands after 1918
Original language description
In the periods of radical political and social changes, revolutions, or simply times of discontinuity, we may witness two complementary processes: necessary reckoning with the “legacy” of the previous socio-political system, and definition of the new values. Conclusions of the current historical research are altering the up to now popular trend of perceiving October 1918 as a fundamental and unprecedented turn. On the contrary, they stress the importance of the continuities in various spheres of society - whether we reckon 1918 as a new beginning or a decline of the previous social order. But meaning the direct “dethroning” of the old symbols that were “not fitting” the new socio-political structure - the process started a long time before 1918. In this context, the cleansing of the public space of visible symbols of the monarchy, the notorious substitution of “the eagle with the lion”, spontaneously occurring in the first months after the War, gives an impression of a significant indication of a process happening already during the Habsburg era.
