Devoutness – Society – Philanthropy. The Social Role of Unwed Noblewomen in the Long Nineteenth Century

  • Original language description

This study explores the social roles of unwed noblewomen in the Habsburg monarchy during the long nineteenth century, a period marked by modernization and the gradual decline of aristocratic privileges. Despite the expectation that noblewomen would fulfill their roles as wives, mothers, and household managers, many remained unmarried and had to seek alternative means of securing their social and economic standing. The article examines the traditional upbringing of noble girls, emphasizing their preparation for marriage and philanthropic activities, which were central to their aristocratic identity. It further delves into the different paths unwed noblewomen could pursue, including remaining within their extended families, serving at the imperial court, joining religious orders, or entering noble foundations. These alternatives, though often perceived as secondary to marriage, allowed aristocratic women to maintain social prestige and uphold traditional noble virtues such as devoutness, loyalty, and philanthropy. Through case studies of various noblewomen, the study illustrates how these women navigated their social environment while contributing to the aristocratic ideal in a changing society.
