Original language description

This chapter will examine the circumstances in which queens consort of the Bohemian Kingdom (Czech Kingdom, Corona Regni Bohemiae) of the fifteenth century could direct the use of natural resources in the royal domain, specifically dowry towns. I will focus on the activities of two queens, Barbara of Cilli (c. 1392–1451) and Joanna of Rožmitál (c. 1430–1475). Both married Czech kings before they became monarchs. Both were powerful before marriage, and this translated into greater economic freedom than had been the case with previous queens. In addition, the activities of these queens made it possible to maintain dowry towns as the traditional domain of queen dowagers in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Bohemian queens not only patronized the arts and the church but also actively managed the entrusted finances, including overseeing natural resources at their disposal. Indeed, the status of queen dowagers created a situation in which the complex of estates centered around their dowry towns remained under their nominal control.
