The international conference explores the multifaceted nature of pre-modern, modern and contemporary republican thought in the broader scope of Central Europe. Scholars from mostly Central European countries (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) delve into topics associated with the fundamental question: „How did the republican political theory flourish in East-Central European political culture and how was it modified in various cultural, political and time contexts?” The reflection on the republican topics covers wide range from historical constitutional debates to theoretical models comparing the experience of the early modern Polish-Lithuanian aristocratic republicanism with the later republican thought of the Enlightenment (Hungary, Poland) as well as with the 19th century radical democratism, feminism or even current post-communist search for Central European identity. The keynote lecture by Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz tackled the controversial question of the king in the historical republican system (“Does the Commonwealth need a king?”).
