Sustainable development of open source systems for production, dissemination and archiving of digital documents – experiences from the Czech Republic
Original language description
Development of Kramerius open source system for digital library was initiated by the National Library of the Czech Republic. First version was released in 2003, six year later in 2009 Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences becomes the guarantor of the development and Fedora was used as repository for Kramerius system. Currently is Kramerius operated by almost 40 biggest Czech libraries and provide access to 150 million of pages. In 2013 was by the same team of developers released ProArc, which is system serving for digital document production and currently is under development system ARCLib, which is solution for long term preservation. Presentation will describe 15 years long way of organizing and funding of development of these open source systems, which gives to its users complex solution for digital documents from production and dissemination to archiving.nnPresentation will cover the development of three open source systems – Kramerius, ProArc and ARCLib which together creates full portfolio of systems which are necessary for production, dissemination and archiving of digital documents. The presentation will mainly concern on the way of organizing and funding of development which keeps the projects running from 2003 already. Kramerius systems which is the initial system developed by the National Library of the Czech Republic and from 2009 under leadership of Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences is widely used in the Czech Republic with around 40 installations in biggest libraries containing 150 million pages. There is also one installation in Germany and one in Slovakia.nnThe Kramerius System is a software solution used as the main access point to digital documents coming from the digitization. It is primarily intended for digitized library collections, monographs and periodicals. It can be used to present other types of documents as well, e.g. maps, music sheets and old prints, or parts of documents, such as articles and chapters. The system is also suitable for born digital documents, the documents that originated in electronic form. Kramerius is continually adjusted to match the structure of the metadata standards proclaimed by the National Library of the Czech Republic. The system provides an interface for end users, providing search in metadata and full text, generating multi-page PDF documents from selected pages, creating virtual collections and other operations on the stored collection of digital documents defined.nnProArc is a digital document production system developed since 2013 based on the Fedora Commons repository, which enables rapid semi-automatic creation of the standard metadata. It is comprised of structural, descriptive and archival metadata, OCR and conversion to specific graphical formats. With regard to the archival part of the solution, standards for long term archiving, such as the OAIS model and archiving ISO standards, are implemented. Archival Information Package is produced which is possible to store in Archivematica archival system.nnOwn archival system ARCLib is currently under development. It will archive data produced by ProArc and also data of another origin.nnAll systems are developed under leadership of the Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences with cooperation of other libraries, mainly with National Library of the Czech Republic and Moravian Library in Brno. Colleagues from other libraries and memory institutions using these systems can also influence the development. During development process there is also long term partnership with technological company which ensure most of programming. Funding is collected from various grants. Main aim of the development team is to be successful in long term grants. Usually there is more than one funding source to assure sustainable development.
