Jewish Educational Literature in the Czech Lands at the End of the 18th Century
Original language description
This paper discusses educational and scholarly literature for Jewish readers in the Czech lands at the end of the 18th century. It is based on a detailed analysis of the printing production of Hebrew printing presses in Habsburg Monarchy – in Prague, Brno, and Vienna – from the 1780s to the end of 18th century. It focuses on textbooks and, more broadly, on didactic and educational works in Jewish languages that were or could have been used in secular Jewish schools, as well as for private study. In addition to textbooks, readers, and grammars, it will also discuss contemporary translations and transliterations between Hebrew and German printed in Hebrew script, which served as aids for learning German.
