Plague year 1680 in Central Europe: using Czech plague registers to monitor epidemic progression

  • Original language description

The aim of the chapter is to provide information about the course and character of the mortality crisis caused by the plague epidemic in Bohemia in 1680. The unique evidence of well-developed system monitoring the epidemic spread was initiated by the governing and ecclesiastical authorities. This system was based on creating data on the number of deceased (and infected) persons in a concrete region, domain or parish, town or village. Indices frequently mentioned the names of the deceased people as well as their demographic profile, for instance: gender, approximate age, symptoms and length of illness, marital status and social class or occupation. In this context, we can consider the analogy between the Czech plague registers and London's well-known 'bills of mortality'.
