    Evolution of 5S rDNA unit arrays in the plant genus Nicotiana (Solanaceae).

    The present paper describes the structure of 5S rDNA intergenic spacer sequences in several Nicotiana species. It is demonstrated that a 141 bp subsequence has experienced several deletions and amplification in course of evolution of genus Nicotiana andaccounts for unit length polymorphisms. In most species of Tomentosae section multiple gene families were observed suggesting absence of strong homogenisation forces compared to the 45S locus. Thus amplification, gain of loss of 5S families accompany Tomentosae speciation.
