Partial molar properties and solute-solvent interactions in dilute solutions of C60 and C70 fullerenes and C21 to C40 n-Alkanes in CO2 from supercritical fluid chromatography.

  • Original language description

Retention factors of C60 and C70 fullerenes and eleven heavy n-alkanes have been measured within 311-431 K and 8.7-39 MPa by supercritical fluid chromatography.(SFC) in an open tubular capillary column using poly(methyl-n-octyl siloxane) as the stationary polymer and carbon dioxide as the mobile-phase fluid. The retention factors have been employed to derive the partial molar volumes of the solutes at infinite dilution in CO2, and the infinite-dilution molar enthalpies of transfer of the solutes from the stationary phase to supercritical CO2. The partial molar volumes have subsequently been transformed to quantities characterizing the short-range solute-CO2 interactions. Attention has been given to the effect on these quantities of the corrections fordissolution of CO2 in the stationary polymer. Overall, the resultant partial molar properties suggest that, compared to the a-alkane-CO2 interactions, the fullerene-CO2 interactions are distinctly less attractive.
