Initial Stage of Oxidation of Iron and Steels Heated at High Temperatures iν Ambient Αir.

  • Original language description

The results relating to oxidation of Fe and of (Fe-C-Cr-Mn-Ni--Si) steels in ambient air at the temperatures 940 up to 1100 C are reported in this paper. The periods of oxidation anneals amounted to 180 up to 910 min. It is possible to describe the course of steels oxidation similarly as Fe-oxidation by the use of parabolic law. The coefficients kp of the parabolic law depend in both cases, steels and .gamma.Fe, on temperature T and, moreover in the case of steels, on the chemical composition of the steels and on the phase transformations occurring in the steels in the course of the oxidation anneal. The coefficients kp(st) can be expressed by the use of the coefficient kp(,gammaFe), by the concentrations N1 of the alloying elements and by the oxidation parameters .alpha..i-0-appertaining to the individual alloying elements. The rate of steel oxidation is proportional to carbon díffusivity D(C) which controls the rate of decarburization of steels.
