The fracture resistance of low carbon manganese cast ferritic steel intended for cask for spent nuclear fuels has been analysed combining several approaches. Arising from two-parameter fracture mechanical approach to the analysis of failure initiation condition the three-point bend specimens (1T) with shallow and deep cracks were tested statically at various temperatures. The effect of crack length on the fracture toughness temperature diagram has been analysed. Calculation procedures for constraint indexing parameter (Q-parameter) and simplified approaches were followed. Pre-cracked Charpy type specimens have been used to test the capability of the master curve methodology and the toughness scaling models to transfer the fracture mechanics data from the small specimen to the larger ones.
