The cyclic plastic response of two polycrystalline materials, one with f.c.c. structure, the other with b.c.c. structure, is analyzed in terms of the general statistical theory of the hysteresis loop based on the Masing hypotheses. Simultaneously, the internal dislocation structure developed in these materials during cyclic straining is studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The inhomogeneous distribution of dislocations with the bands corresponding to localization of the cyclic plastic strain supports the use of the statistical theory. The analysis of the loop shape by plotting the first and the second derivative of the half-loop allows determining effective stress and the probability density function of the criticalinternal stresses.
