Short crack growth mechanism and kinetics were studied in austenitic stainless 316L steel strained with constant plastic strain amplitude under constant tensile mean stress in fatigue cycle. Fatigue cracks initiated along strain localized areas and cracklinking was the main mechanism of the early crack growth. Two different regimes in short crack growth were identified. The early regime of linear growth is characterized by the constant crack growth rate. Later, the crack growth rate is directly proportional to the crack length. Crack growth rate is increased by tensile mean stress in both short crack growth regimes.
