Fracture toughness and surface roughness characteristics of glass matrix composite reinforced by alumina platelets
Original language description
Glass matrix composites are a perspective structural material for many applications due to their low production expenses and satisfactory properties even at elevated temperatures. The choice of borosilicate glass matrix composite reinforced by alumina platelets was due to expected improvement of mechanical properties especially of fracture resistance and flexural strength. The alumina platelets have a higher ability to deflect propagating crack in comparison with particles of spherical or rectangular geometry having the same volume fraction. Fracture toughness determination was conducted using chevron notch technique. The fractographical analysis was employed to reveal vitality of toughening mechanism with increasing content of reinforcement. In composite with 30% of alumina platelets the toughening mechanism was suppressed by presence of close packed platelets.

Lomová houževnatost a povrchová drsnost u kompozitu se skelnou matricí vyztuženou korundovými destičkami
