Assessment of Fracture Resistance of Structural Ceramics at Higher Strain Rates
Original language description
Many components made from advanced ceramics are exposed to severe conditions and unpredictable loading. Short term and high speed (impact) loading can lead to the catastrophic damage of the component and/or its failure. There is a lack of fracture data and knowledge base of material response at loading in the range between quasistatic and ballistic loading rates. A cast basalt, silicon carbide, alumina containing zirconia and glass were the main experimental materials used in this investigation as a representative of natural based structural ceramics, widely used advanced ceramic and as a model material, respectively. The main aim of the contribution is to investigate influence of strain rate on fracture resistance and to analyse response of the microstructure to high strain rate loading including the change of mechanical properties. The fractographic analysis of fracture surfaces was employed in the investigation with the aim to identify changes in fracture behaviour.
