The effect of particle properties on crack behaviour in polymer composites
Original language description
Thepresent work is focused mainly on polypropylene based composites filled by mineral fillers, but some results can be generalized for other particle composites. Due to the chemical and physical interaction between matrix and particle a third phase (called interphase) is formed. This region controls adhesion between particles and matrix and plays an important role in the composite material properties. The effect of the interphase and microstructural morphology on the macroscopic characteristics of the composite is primarily studied. Generally, the addition of the mineral filler to the polymer matrix leads to embrittlement of the composite. It is shown that properties of the interphase control both the stiffness and embrittlement of the particulate composite. In some cases of the microscopic particle size and specific interphase properties the addition of a mineral filler can lead to a good balance between fracture toughness and stiffness.
