Applicability of a modified compact tension specimen for measuring the fracture energy of concrete
Original language description
This work deals with the study of a new modified compact tension (MCT) test to be applied for measuring the specific fracture energy of concrete as a simpler alternative to the traditional three-point bending or wedge splitting tests. A description of the MCT tests is herein presented and the results from the application of this method on four different specimens varying the width and notch depths and casted with a single self-compacting concrete mix are shown. In order to analyse the suitability of theMCT method and to validate the results, three-point bending tests have also been carried out on prismatic notched beams with two well-distinct relative notch depths so that the simplified boundary effect method from Abdalla and Karihaloo can be appliedand a value of the size-independent fracture energy for the same concrete be obtained.
