Processing window for hot consolidation by rolling and rotary swaging of Fe-10Al-4Cr-4Y2O3 ODS nanocomposite

  • Original language description

Creep and oxidation resistant alloys applicable up to 1300 °C are missing on the market. The coarse-grained Fe-10Al-4Cr-4Y2O3 ODS nanocomposite, recently developed by the authors and denoted as FeAlOY, has a good potential to fill the gap. Compared to conventional ODS alloys, the FeAlOY contains ten times higher volume fraction of the most stable pure Y2O3 nanodispersoid providing better mechanical properties and a significantly higher fraction of Al guaranteeing excellent oxidation resistance. The coarse-grained microstructure is achieved by secondary recrystallization of the ultra-fine-grained FeAlOY hot consolidated from mechanically alloyed powder. The hot consolidation represents the most critical processing step. For successful industrial production of the high-quality FeAlOY with good reproducibility it is necessary to determine the temperature processing window for hot consolidation by both, rolling and rotary swaging. A suitable processing window is found to be within the temperature range of 850–950 °C. This finding is supported by microstructure analyses and mechanical tensile testing at 1100 °C of the secondary recrystallized FeAlOY.
