The Effect of Multiple Impacts of Water Droplets on the Integrity of CFRP Composite
Original language description
The paper deals with the surface erosion of a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) due to the multiple impacts of water droplets. The innovative technology of pulsating water jet (PWJ) was used for the study, where a continuous water jet was split into discrete clusters of water droplets. Increasing exposure time was used to analyze the evolution of erosion over time. Erosion exposure increased from 2 s to 15 s in 1-s increments. The hydraulic parameters were as follows: pressure 20 MPa, water jet speed 184 m/s, nozzle diameter of 0.2 mm. Resulting clusters of water droplets hit the surface of the composite with a frequency of 40 kHz. The depth of the erosion craters was assessed using a confocal microscope and the mechanism of erosion was observed using a scanning electron microscope. The work aimed to carry out preliminary research dealing with the erosion development of erosion and determining the erosion resistance of the CFRP composite.n
