Low Energy Contrast of Metal Matrix Composite in SEM.
Original language description
Ceramic/Al alloys composite materials, as an important example of the metal matrix composites (MMC), are investigated because of intended improvement to mechanical properties of the age-hardenable aluminium alloys. Especially Al.sub.2./sub.O.sub.3./sub.has its history as regards the MMC applications. Owing to its lower weight, higher melting point and larger Young modulus in comparison with Al alloys, it is expected to enhance the thermal resistivity and the strength of the composite. One-dimensional MMC with long fibres of alumina, although really strong along the texture direction, were found difficult to machine and not suitable for extruding, bending, etc. The new approach of 3D MMC faces problems with homogeneity of the particle distribution. Thetechnology consisting in preparation of a precursor of ceramic fibres or particles, which is then poured by the molten metal, leads to enhanced contents (20 to 30 volume) of particles larger than 1 micro m and an inhomogeneous particle d
