Electron beam welding of stainless steel with tungsten, tantalum and molybdenum.
Original language description
The components of some devices, which are exposed to very high temperature, must be made of such special materials like tungsten, molybdenum or tantalum. For example, some parts of a ion source are heated in vacuum up to 2000 degrees C. All these metals, particlularly tungsten, are difficult to machine and all are comparatively high-priced. If only a smaller part of the construction component is heated to the high temperature, it may be expedient to make its cooler part of some other, less expensive material, e.g. stainless steel. This, in many cases, may be advantageous for the low thermal conductivity of this material. For joining of materials mentioned above the only applicable method is the electron-beam welding in vacuum. Previously we have applied this technology for joining aluminium to titanium [1], nickel, silver, and/or copper to stainless steel [2,3]. According to our experience, the creation of brittle inter-metallic compounds by welding of two dissimilar materials can be p
