The authors of the paper will concentrate on these two questions: What evidence about a writerŽs personality is suggested by his/her work and how can this evidence be tapped? Does the life of an artist determine the form of his/her artwork, and if so, inwhat way? These areas will be touched upon in the paper: a) The possibility of interpreting an artistŽs personality and life by confronting his/her artworks with autobiographical and biographical materials, b) The limits of reconstructing an artistŽs personality and life from his/her artworks when the personal documents and the biographical data are unavailable.The authors illustrate the two approaches to the psychological analysis of literary texts on the work of Sylvia Plath and Sarah Kane ů two authors who committed suicide. Autoři příspěvku se snaží najít odpovědi na tyto otázky: Jakou evidenci o autorově osobnosti nám poskytuje jeho dílo a jak tuto evidenci lze vypátrat? Určuje život umělce formu jeho díla a pokud, potom jakým způsobem? V příspěvku se věnují těmto okruhům:a) Možnost interpretace autorovy osobnosti a života konfrontací díla s autobiografickými a biografickými materiály, b) Meze rekonstrukce autorovy osobnosti a života z jeho díla v případě, že žádné osobní dokumenty a biografické materiály nejsou k dispozici. Autoři ilustrují tyto dva přístupy k psychologické analýze literárních textů na díle Sylvie Plathové a Sarah Kaneové ? dvou autorek, které spáchaly sebevraždu. V případě Sylvie Plathové se pokouší ukázat možnosti psychologické analýzy literárního díla zakotvené ve srovnávací analýze díla a životních zkušeností popsaných v biografických materiálech a osobních dokumentech.
