The chapter provides an overview of approaches to the genetic study of language disorders, summarizing research results in this area. The ways in which the language system can be disordered are described, and the genetic conditions that affect language are discussed. Further, the chapter describes the methods used in the search for specific genes related to language disorders: this is documented on the case of the FOXP2 gene. Finally, the authors discuss psychometric aspects of the research on languageabilities and their possible impact on the results of genetic research, in particular on the ability to distinguish between language-specific and generally cognitive genetic traits.

Kapitola podává přehled přístupů ke studiu genetiky jazykových poruch a výzkumných výsledků v této oblasti. V kapitole jsou popsány způsoby, jakými může být jazyk narušen, a geneticky podmíněné poruchy, u nichž je porucha jazyka součástí obrazu. Dále jepodán základní popis metod, které lze použít při identifikaci konkrétních genů zodpovědných za poruchy různých aspektů jazyka: to je dokumentováno na příkladu genu FOXP2. Poté jsou diskutovány technické a psychometrické aspekty výzkumu jazykových schopností, které mohou mít vliv na výsledky genetického výzkumu jazyka, zejména na schopnost rozlišit mezi doménově specifickými jazykovými mechanismy a mechanismy obecně kognitivními.
