Intergroup contact in border regions of five Central European countries
Original language description
The research focuses on the interplay between conditions of intergroup contact and intergroup attitudes in areas with high probability of outgroup members encounters. The first goal of the study was to describe the nature of intergroup contact in real-life settings as perceived by its actual participants. Second, we wanted to determine the interplay between different aspects of contact and evaluative component of intergroup attitudes. Content analysis of the open statements revealed 10 descriptive and 6evaluative categories generally characterizing the nature of intergroup contact. We found that salient characteristics of intergroup encounters differ not only across border regions but also within one region on the two sides of the border. Furthermore, results across the four border regions indicated that the attitudes towards the outgroup are predicted by different contact conditions.
