    Societal frustrations in a totalitarian vs. post-totalitarian condition and their assessment

    Societal frustrations were analyzed from the point of view of hierarchy of needs theory (Maslow, Alderfer), the frustration-aggression theory (Dollard et al.), psychology of systemic frustration (Feierabend, Gurr), and the post-totalitarian syndrome (Klicperova-Baker). A representative sample of the Czech Republic (1093 respondents aged 15-69 years, 52% women) was surveyed by an original Societal Frustrations (SoFr) questionnaire with 32 items in 6 blocks, and a 6-point response scale (1 representing non-existent and 6 an extreme frustration). The survey was administered twice, once with respect to the authoritarian Communist regime (before 1989) and then referring to the current (2008) democratic but post-communist conditions. Results indicate a considerable social dissatisfaction both with the past (raw score 3.70) and with the present time (3.77).
