Can we increase valuation of work by presenting the work specific information?
Original language description
The IKEA effect (Norton, Mochon, & Ariely, 2012) suggests that as creators we highly overvalue our own work, but as evaluators we think that products made by creators are not that good as creators think. The amount of our invested work significantly increases our value of the particular object. We looked on the IKEA effect from the evaluator’s point of view and we measured whether we can increase the valuation (willingness to pay) of the creation by presenting a specific type of information about work and thus observing the changes in perception. Subjects (180) were randomly assigned to one of our six experimental conditions: group of product creators, and five groups of evaluators whom we presented three types of information about the product (presented separately or as a combination): (1) production information, (2) visual information, (3) hands-on-experience information. We were not able to confirm the IKEA effect, neither significant influence of the presented types of information.
