In terms of its historical significance and scientific potential, the settlement complex of Mikulčice-Kopčany is one of the most important localities of Great Moravia. The ?Slavic stronghold at Mikulčice archaeological monument as a fortified core of thesettlement complex is authentic proof of how the princely (ruler?s) residence looked in the 9th century. The research carried out here may resolve archaeological and historical questions at other Great Moravian localities that are inaccessible. The first stage of research (large-scale excavations 1954?1992) resulted in fieldwork covering an area of 5 hectares and a huge collection of finds. The second stage, the systematic processing of these finds, began in 1993, focusing first of all on the individual categories of finds and was followed by the third stage, a comprehensive assessment of the field documentation.
