The scene of a spectacular feast (part II): Animal remains from Dolní Věstonice II, the Czech Republic
Original language description
Studies of the archaeological and paleontological materials from Dolni Vestonice II provide insight into the lives of humans nearly 30,000 years ago. Bones of small animals (birds, hares, foxes) and medium animals (wolf, reindeer, wolverine) dominate at the site, but there are also bones of large mammals (bears, cave lion, horse and mammoth), showing that the prey spectrum of the hunters was wide. The large total number of animal remains supports the suggestion that these were accumulated during a relatively long human occupation of the site, perhaps lasting months or even years.
