Last Glacial Maximum paved stone structures from Mohelno-Plevovce, Moravia

  • Original language description

The Mohelno-Plevovce site is located in Jihlava River valley deeply incised into the Bohemian-Moravian Highland, ca. 30 km to the west from the present city of Brno. As the site is continually eroded by water level fluctuations (on a daily basis) caused by a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant, the eroding banks are regularly monitored by archaeologists. Until now, rescue excavations have uncovered two spatially separated paved areas - stone structures labeled A and B. These stone structures are associated with a peculiar lithic industry characterized by tiny microliths, produced on atypical carinated end scrapers/cores, and splintered tools/bipolar anvil cores. The artifacts were made from both local and exotic rocks. The spatial distribution of finds copies the pavement boundary, suggesting a barrier effect. The structures are therefore interpreted as interior floor features of sheltered constructions - possible huts.
