The Gravettian in Moravia: a complex hunter-gatherer adaptation to climate change
Original language description
The Gravettian culture developed throughout Europe before 30-20 ka. During this period, the territory of Moravia, and especially the landscape around the Pavlov Hills, became one of the most important cultural centres of the then-populated world. It is here that new technologies, such as the production of ceramics, textiles, or stone grinding, appear for the first time in the world. The area around Dolní Věstonice thus represents a unique complex of hunter-gatherer settlements, testifying not only to mammoth hunting but also to a wide range of other human activities, which are evidenced by the remains of dwellings, hearths, numerous artefacts, as well as human ritual burials and artistic and symbolic objects.
