Re-excavation of Stránská skála III
Original language description
Stránská skála III is a poly-cultural site excavated during 1981-82. The excavation was initiated by a pipeline trench that cut through a large sunken feature filled with Funnel Beaker Culture material. This feature was interpreted as a workshop where local chert nodules were extracted from adjacent quarried limestone blocks and knapped for blanks (Svoboda and Šmíd, 1996). Later, the Paleolithic artifacts were excavated from the intact sediments below the Eneolithic infill by Valoch and Svoboda (Svoboda and Bar-Yosef, eds., 2003).nWe identified a profile between sectors 7 and 4 that was left unexcavated in previous excavations. It is an area characterized not only by a high density of both Eneolithic and Paleolithic finds, but also features a partly unexcavated hearth in the Paleolithic layer.n
