How the Newstead-type lorica segmentata was fastened at the upper chest has long puzzled researchers. Over the past century, a range of reconstructions have been proposed, but none could be confirmed due to the fragmentary nature of surviving finds. This paper presents the first definitive solution, based on a systematic analysis of armour remains from Carnuntum, Austria. The key lies in the tie rings, which are small but revealing components whose form and placement have been overlooked. Our research demonstrates that not all tie rings are identical and some were used to close the upper chest area. These findings resolve a longstanding debate and allow for a more accurate reconstruction of the Newstead-type armour’s function and appearance.
