Mammoth bone accumulations in Central Europe – what do we already know, and what would we like to find out?
Original language description
The contribution reviews current knowledge and open questions concerning large accumulations of woolly mammoth remains associated with Upper Paleolithic artefacts in Central Europe, with a focus on sites in the West Carpathian forelands and the classic locality of Dolní Věstonice. It addresses how these assemblages formed and what roles they played for hunter-gatherer groups 35,000–25,000 years ago, a period of major techno-cultural and environmental change. Drawing on more than a century of research, it discusses competing interpretations ranging from natural accumulations and the use of carcasses of naturally deceased mammoths to deliberate transport and specialized mammoth hunting strategies. The paper emphasises complex site formation histories involving both natural and anthropogenic processes, recurrent occupations, and palimpsest deposits, and outlines the most recent results and future research directions.
