Original language description
The article synthesises current knowledge of early medieval iron production in Moravia, with particular emphasis on the Great Moravian period and its economic and political context. It argues that iron production was largely concentrated in sparsely settled peripheral zones and closely linked to central places and their dynamics. Using the Scandinavian concept of utmark, the author proposes the hypothesis that seasonally used outlands were integrated into regional market networks. After the collapse of Great Moravia and its central places, iron production may have become more decentralised and increasingly oriented towards the local self-sufficiency of surviving communities.
