‘Elites’ and iron production: The Carolingian perspective

  • Original language description

This chapter critically reassesses the role of elites in Carolingian iron production, arguing against both a purely market-driven model and a fully elite-controlled command economy. Drawing on archaeological and historical case studies, it shows that iron mining, smelting, and processing were largely decentralised and locally organised, though often shaped by manorial structures and elite interests. Peasant and multi-craft communities played a central role in production, while elites primarily influenced attached workshops producing valuables at higher-order sites such as monasteries and courts. Overall, the Carolingian iron economy is presented as heterogeneous, flexible, and embedded in complex networks of redistribution, exchange, and local markets.
