A new Gravettian mammoth bone deposit in Ústí nad Labem

  • Original language description

This contribution presents a new Upper Palaeolithic site discovered during the rescue excavation for Justice Palace in Ústí nad Labem, north Bohemia. The known extent of the site is about 1000 m2 . The excavation has uncovered a concentration of bones belonging to minimally nineteen woolly mammoths accompanied by sporadic remains of equids, cervids and woolly rhinoceros. The anthropogenic origin of the bone deposit is supported by presence of combustion features, red ochre, manuports and lithic artefacts. The lithic assemblage exhibits notable raw material variability. The techno-typological character and presence of backed bladelets and bitruncated elements allows an attribution to the Middle to Late Gravettian. This corresponds with the first radiocarbon dates spanning between 21,500 and 22,500 BP. As Upper Palaeolithic sites are very rare in northern Bohemia, this discovery has a great potential for a more detailed insight into the human occupation and environmental conditions during the Upper Palaeolithic in this region. The further study of the osteological and archaeological material is ongoing. Isotopic and DNA analysis are conducted by the ERC MAMBA project infrastructure and the results will be interpreted in the broader context of mammoth bone deposit phenomenon in Central Europe.
