The introduction of mouflon into forest habitats: a desirable increasing of biodiversity?
Original language description
Mouflon was introduced into the Czech Republic with the aim to fill the gap of a free ecological niche in forest ecosystems and to increase a diversity of ungulate assemblies. How does the purpose correspond with the result of studies of its feeding ecology? Mouflon co-exists together with 1 to 4 species of ruminants in various areas. The entire density of these large herbivores is high (it reaches more than 50 red deer units per 1000 hectares of woodland). Grasses prevail in the mouflon diet (42-65% ofvolume) and the second important item are woody species (27-41% of value). Other items constitute less than 10% of volume in average. The foraging niches of mouflon and of the other ruminants (roe deer, red deer, wild goat) overlap in individual localities from 22 to 96%. In winter, an important part of the diet of all these species is represented by shoots of woody plants (from 28 to 65% of volume). An intensive browse of Picea abies (low palatable species) in the shrub layer gives evi
