Large carnivores in the Carpathian Mountains: status and conservation problems

Original language description

The Carpathian Mountains of Central and Eastern Europe harbour the largest European population large carnivores: brown bear Ursus arctos, wolf Canis lupus, and Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx. Political and economical transformations in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s considerably changed conditions for those species, albeit differently in the various countries. Recent international initiatives have stimulated discussions on a holistic conservation strategy for the Carpathians, and large carnivores havebecome its very important element. Experts from 6 Carpathian countries collected data from all available sources on conservation status of large carnivores and major threats to their existence.

Czech description

Karpaty, ležící ve střední a východní Evropě, jsou domovem největších evropských populací velkých šelem: medvěda hnědého, vlka obecného a rysa ostrovida. Politické a ekonomické změny, probíhající ve střední a východní Evropě od počátku 90tých let, vyvolaly také změny podmínek existence populací velkých šelem v této oblasti. To stimulovalo diskusi o základních atributech strategie ochrany karpatských šelem. Experti ze 6 karpatských zemí shromáždili data o aktuálním stavu ochrany a managementu populací velkých šelem.
