Seasonal and diel patterns of song output by great reed warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus.
Original language description
We examined seasonal and diel singing activity budgets of great reed warblers in two areas of Central Europe in three different ways, over a period of ten consecutive years. Song was recorded from 12 April to 3 August. Males exhibited regular singing activity after arrival with a peak in the second half of May and beginning of June, Thereafter their activity continued to decrease and almost ceased in mid-July. In both study sites great reed warblers exhibited similar seasonal patterns of singing activity. There was a significant difference in the rate of singing between daylight and the dark (88.7% and 11.3% respectively); this ratio was similar over the whole song-period. We found similar singing rates in the first and the second half of the day. Thechanges in singing activity were connected with twilight**. The period of daylight alternating with the dark stimulated song output of great reed warblers. In the morning, two to three hours after twilight, activity increased considerably
