New data on karyotypic variation in the common shrew, Sorex araneus, from the Czech Republic: an extension of the range of the Laska race.
Original language description
Populations of the common shrew (Sorex araneus) from the Czech Republic have so far been reported to belong either to the Ulm race (gm, hi, jl) or the Drnholec race (gm, hi, jl, ko, nr). Both the races meet and form a wide hybrid zone within the Czech territory. The present paper reports new karyotypic data for 50 individuals of the common shrew collected from 15 geographic sites. The data obtained enabled to precise the known range of the two races in central Europe. Furthermore, the presence of the Laska race (gm, hi, jl, k/o) was indicated in a mountain range in northern Bohemia. The evolutionary history and the recent distribution range of the Laska race is discussed in respect of the pattern of chromosomal evolution among common shrew populationsin central Europe.
