Deer browsing in floodplain forest.
Original language description
Browsing on shoots was examined in a floodplain forest near the Morava River (Czech Republic). We counted browsed and unbrowsed shoots of the following three tree species: oak, field maple and ash. Shoots were highly browsed during the winter season (78%), whereas in autumn browsing was lower (26%). The most browsed tree species in the course of a year was oak. Oak was the most browsed species (42%) in clear-cuts. Field maple was mostly browsed in the shrub layer of the forest plots (45 %). Roe deer browsed on shoots with higher intensity on both clear-cuts (p<0.05) and the shrub layer plots (p=0.06). Oak and ash were also damaged by red deer bark striping, which occurred mainly in clear-cuts.
