Dybowski's sika deer (Cervus nippon hortulorum): genetic diversity of native Primorian and introduced Czech populations
Original language description
Historical records indicate a possible presence of Dybowski's sika deer subspecies (Cervus nippon hortulorum) within sika deer animals introduced to the Czech Republic. The aim of our study was to confirm subspecific affiliation of Dybowski's sika deer in the CR and to compare genetic diversity of both populations. Up to date 58 tissue samples from the Czech population and from 22 tissue samples from the Primorian population (Lazovsky Reserve) have been analysed. The population genetic diversity was studied using two mitochondrial markers: cytochrome b gene and control region. Our results confirmed the relationship between introduced Czech and native Primorian populations. According to a priori expectation, genetic diversity of the Czech population wasdetected to be extremely low due to founder effect. Similarly, genetic diversity of the Primorian population was detected to be as low as that of the Czech population. This indicates serious bottleneck of the Primorian population.
