Carassius auratus gibelio?the most successful invasive fish in waters of the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Carassius auratus is considered an alien invasive taxon in the hydrographic system of the Czech Republic, having immigrated it from the Danube around 1976. Helped by man, it overcame the boundaries between separate drainage basins and populated expansively all suitable habitats. The initial populations that occupied the new range consisted of triploid females only. When males began occurring in the populations after 1990 the initial unisexual female (triploid) populations began transforming into mixed ones, consisting of both females and males. The mixed populations reproduce both gynogenetically and sexually. C. auratus is a significant competitive as well as destructive factor against the native ichthyofauna The native species, Carassius carassius and Tinca tinca, previously abundant, vanished from localities by C. auratus. From the natural habitats, C. auratus is obtained by hook and line fishing and the registered bags are 50-60 tonnes annually.
