Non-native Gobiid species in the lower River Rhine (Germany): recent range extensions and densities

  • Original language description

Recent distribution of Gobiid fishe in the lower Rhine was described. Our results demonstrate (1) the range extension of two gobiid species (bighead goby, round goby) throughout the Lower Rhine between Cologne and the boarder to the Netherlands within afew years, (2) the successful reproduction within the new habitats of all three species, and (3) the dominance of these invasive species within the local fish communities. This gives some evidence that at least P. kessleri and N. melanostomus may substantially affect the bioceonosis of the River Rhine.
