Long-term study of the mosquito fauna (Diptera, Culicidae) of the Czech lowlands and highlands during flood and flood-free years
Original language description
In the Czech Republic, frequent weather extremes, e.g. heavy rainfalls or fast thawing of snow (2006), caused devastating floods followed by a massive development of mosquito populations. Catastrophic floods came in 1997, 2002, and 2006. More recently, at the end of June and beginning of July 2009 and in May and August 2010, after sudden torrential rains, flash floods occurred. Then, massive mosquito populations developed in well known mosquito areas as well as in places where mosquitoes rarely cause major problems (e.g. the Odra river basin). Mosquito species distribution was monitored based on regular collections (using four different methods: catches of mosquito larvae, catches of mosquito females on and around human volunteers, sweeping mosquito males around breeding sites, and CO2 trap catches) during the mosquito seasons 2007 and 2008 (flood-free years) and 2009 and 2010 (catastrophic flood years). The mosquito species distribution in the lowlands was compared with that in the ro
